How To Ground Your Energy

Have you ever had the feeling that if you don’t allow yourself to slow down and stop juggling everything, your world will come crashing down on you?

Are you somewhat scattered and rushed at the best of times?

If this sounds familiar then you may be struggling with living in a grounded state.

One of the greatest challenges for an overachiever is finding balance.

Living in a balanced state doesn’t mean your life is always consistent or perfectly organized. Balance comes from a present state of awareness within yourself, where you make decisions and navigate through obstacles from a grounded place. With a bit of awareness, you can learn how to channel your driven energy in a way that feels intentional and nurtures your body, mind, and soul.

What Does It Mean To Be Grounded?

Being grounded means that you are connected to the present moment with a deep awareness of your body & mind while conscious of what you’re doing. You make decisions from a centered perspective, thinking through what is aligned with your values and taking a moment to stop and enjoy the view. Being grounded means you focus on the journey as opposed to the destination.

You can feel the heaviness in your body, you are aware of the breaths you take in the moments you come back to center. You’re acquainted with your senses.

Ask yourself:

What do you feel?

What do you see?

What do you smell?

What do you hear?

What do you taste?

In my personal experience, it took a series of “wake up” moments for me to notice my scattered energy because at one time it was my default. I was lead to a place where I finally asked myself, What's going on? Am I in my body? Am I being present? I was always looking toward the next thing, trying to get to the future and forgetting to be in the moment. I wanted to learn how to grow roots to stabilize my energy, and that meant making adjustments to how I was showing up in my life.

This simple, yet powerful state of being provides you with a solid foundation from which you can grow an intentional life.

The process of becoming grounded will raise your energetic vibration and connect you to what matters most. When you are grounded you are more at ease with yourself and your external environment, no matter what is going on in your life.

The Signs And Symptoms Of Being Ungrounded

When you are ungrounded you feel out of control and out of touch with reality. If you’ve had moments when you feel like everything is chaotic and out of step then it's likely you’ve been ungrounded. You might experience feelings of being scattered, anxious, fatigued, restless, inability to focus, clumsiness and buzzing. Perhaps you have a lot on your plate preventing your body and mind from a goodnight’s sleep.

To find this anchored place, you first need to become aware of what’s happening within yourself when you are in this state. If you recognize these signs within yourself, the most powerful next step is to simply become aware of when you are in this state. Awareness is power. From that place, you can begin to practice ways to bring yourself back down to earth.

Tips And Tricks

If you want to restore your energy and ground yourself try these techniques. As you implement them into your daily rituals and everyday practice, you’ll be able to harness the benefits of an intentional state.

Reconnect WITH THE EARTH

There's nothing like losing yourself in mother nature. From the grass to the trees, fresh air and changing skies this is the best place to go to regain perspective. The physical practice of grounding, also known as earthing, is one of the most powerful methods that will give you more stability and strengthen your nature connection.

Simply kick off your shoes and sink your feet and toes into the earth. Feel the heaviness of your body on the ground. If you aren’t able to get outside, take your shoes off and put your feet on the floor. Visualize roots coming out through your feet and into the ground below.

More tips for grounding with nature:

  • Place your hand on a tree trunk or stand next to a tree

  • Breathe in fresh air

  • Sit in the sun and become aware of how the warmth feels on your skin

  • Place your bare feet in the grass or dirt and notice how you feel

  • Paint your toenails a bright color as a reminder to go barefoot

MEDITATION

Meditation is a transformative mindfulness practice that helps you to become more aware and present. When you factor in grounding, your meditation routine can adapt to include using your feet as an anchor to the ground.

Through this activity you can slow the mind down and pause, giving yourself time to recollect your thoughts and recharge. Meditation will make you feel as though you are returning to your original state.

Try this grounding meditation to help you live in the moment:

  1. Sit up with your feet on the ground, close your eyes and take a few deep breaths.

  2. Countdown from 10 to 1 slowly until you feel yourself draw away from the outside world.

  3. Notice your feet against the ground and allow its energy to flow up through your body and toward your head.

  4. As you feel yourself connecting with the earth imagine the base of your spine extending down into the ground, pulling you deeper into a state of relaxation and balance.

  5. Enjoy the sensations of being grounded and soak it all in.

  6. When you are ready to return slowly bring yourself back into your body by counting from 1 to 5 and gently wiggle your fingers and toes as you go.

CRYSTAL HEALING

Each variation of crystals has its own healing and metaphysical properties. As they connect with specific energy centres in the body they can offer many benefits to the body. In the instance of grounding, you could use root chakra crystals for energy healing.

The root chakra corresponds to the element of earth. When the chakra is activated and balanced, you feel more grounded, connected and rooted to the energy of life. There are several crystals to choose from if you want to ground yourself, some are:

  • Red Jasper

  • Hematite

  • Clear Quartz

  • Shungite

  • Smoky Quartz

  • Tourmaline

Keep these crystals close by either in your pocket or worn as jewellery so that you can get long-lasting benefits from their energy.

RECONNECTION TO SELF-CARE

One of the most effective ways to practice grounding is to take time away from your obligations and busy schedule to enjoy your life. I like to call this “yin” time, as it’s all about rest, nurturing and solitude. Take unstructured time out of your busy schedule to just be without having to do anything. Taking this time away can actually be exactly what you need to show up to your work more productively. Try taking a full day off without guilt and see how this increases your performance.

Ways to ground yourself using self-care practices:

  • Epsom salt bath (my favorite way to ground)

  • Essential oils or Frankincense incense

  • Taking a nap

  • Reading a book

  • Silence

  • Rubbing oil on your feet

  • Massage or Reiki

  • Soft, gentle music

  • Journaling
